Via Transilvanica is on everyone's lips lately—and for good reason! This incredible project offers a chance to see an authentic Romania, filled with places and traditions that would otherwise remain hidden. Beyond the adventure, the trail actively contributes to the protection and revival of these precious rural areas.

Why choose an electric bike for Via Transilvanica?

During my first trip on the trail, I realized that for certain sections, I would much rather be on a bike. Not everyone has the time or the physical stamina to hike dozens of kilometers every day. The electric bike offers an excellent alternative: you can cover in a single day what would normally take 2-3 days on foot, without losing the charm of the surroundings.

It is the ideal option for:

  • Those with limited time.

  • People who prefer not to hike long distances.

  • Anyone looking to combine adventure with comfort.

The Via Transilvanica Trail in Hunedoara County

In Hunedoara, the trail spans approximately 130 km, with a total elevation gain of +/- 3500 meters. In theory, it can be completed in 3 days on an eBike, depending on your fitness level, bike type, luggage, and weather conditions.

🔋 Battery Life: How far can you go?

To give you an idea: for a person weighing 75 kg, tackling climbs of ~1000 m, you can cover about 70 km in standard mode. Of course, range depends on the terrain, how much you pedal, and weather conditions.

The 3-Day Route Breakdown

Terra Dacica trail

The trail begins in Romoșel and ends at Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana, passing through spectacular landscapes and authentic villages. Here is our recommended split:

Day 1: Romoșel – Sarmizegetusa Regia

📏 40 km | 🔺 1535 m elevation gain

This stage takes you through dense forests in a remote and extremely peaceful area. Pro tip: Pack enough supplies, as food sources are scarce here. The atmosphere is unique—total silence, no traffic, and no crowds—allowing you to truly feel the energy of this ancient land. As you approach Sarmizegetusa Regia (a UNESCO World Heritage site and the capital of the Dacian civilization), the spiritual weight of the place is palpable.

Day 2: Sarmizegetusa Regia – Ohaba Ponor

📏 36 km | 🔺 1130 m elevation gain

After visiting the fortress, the trail continues toward Târsa—a village scattered across hilltops with breathtaking views of the Retezat Mountains. The highlight of this day is Fundătura Ponorului, nicknamed "God's Palm"—an isolated corner of heaven that looks like something out of a fairytale.

Day 3: Ohaba Ponor – Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana

📏 52 km | 🔺 1000 m elevation gain

The final stage crosses the Hațeg Country UNESCO Global Geopark. Expect dreamlike scenery: gentle climbs, wide-open vistas, and very little asphalt. Part of the route follows a former railway line through the "Iron Gate of Transylvania" pass. The journey ends grandly at Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana, the capital of Roman Dacia.

Note: You don't have to do the full trail! You can opt for a single-day adventure. We can handle the delivery and pick-up of the bikes at different locations for you.

Conclusion

Via Transilvanica is an invitation to explore and discover. On an electric bike, the trail becomes accessible, flexible, and just as impressive. If you want to experience this "magic road" in an efficient and exciting way, an eBike is your best choice.
