Places to Visit Near Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle

Everyone comes to Hunedoara for Corvin Castle, and for good reason – it’s one of the most dramatic Gothic fortresses in Europe. But what most visitors don’t realize is just how much there is to explore right outside the castle gates.

Because I run an eBike rental here, I spend a lot of time riding these routes myself. An electric bike gives you the freedom to cover much more ground than on foot, climb hills without sweating buckets, and discover corners of Hunedoara County that cars and buses simply skip.

Here are some of my favourite half-day and full-day rides starting from Corvin Castle:

Ținutul Pădurenilor – The Land of the Forest People

Tinutul Padurenilor

This is my go-to “intro ride.” In less than an hour you’re out of the city and into rolling hills, shady forests, and villages where time seems to stand still. Wooden churches, haystacks, and incredible viewpoints pop up around every bend.

Perfect for a relaxed half-day trip.

Țara Hațegului – Dinosaurs & Medieval Legends

Densus Church

If you’ve got the whole day, point your handlebars towards Hațeg. This UNESCO Global Geopark is where dwarf dinosaurs once roamed. Today you can pedal through meadows, stop at the Dinosaur House museum, and even climb up to Colț Fortress (the one Bram Stoker is said to have used as inspiration for Dracula’s castle).

A full-day adventure but absolutely worth it.

The Old Train Line & Cinciș Lake

Hunedoara Old Train Line

This is a quirky local favourite. You follow the remnants of Hunedoara’s old industrial railway and end up at Lacul Cinciș – a big, blue reservoir ringed by hills. In summer you can swim, rent a kayak, or just have a picnic on the shore.

Great for a half-day escape from town.

Quick Hills Around Hunedoara

Hunedoara Viewpoint

Sometimes you don’t need to go far. Ride up to the hills above the city for sweeping views of Corvin Castle itself. It’s the fastest way to feel like you’ve earned your Instagram shot without leaving Hunedoara.

One to two hours, ideal if you’re short on time.

Deva Citadel

Deva Citadel

Eighteen kilometres of easy riding brings you to Deva, where a 13th-century fortress sits on a volcanic hill. You can pedal right to the base or take the cable car up. The view over the Mureș Valley is huge, and the cafés in Deva’s old centre make a nice pit stop.

Great for a half-day escape from town.

Retezat Mountains Viewpoints

Retezat National Park

From Corvin Castle you can ride out of Hunedoara into rolling hills with the Retezat peaks rising ahead. In less than an hour you’ll start seeing wide-open views and, on clear days, the jagged mountains of the national park.

On the way back swing by Cinciș Lake for a quick swim or coffee stop. This loop mixes hills, forest tracks and traditional hamlets - perfect for a half-day eBike adventure without feeling rushed.

 A half-day , easy trip.

Exploring Hunedoara County by eBike is the best way I know to turn a simple castle visit into an adventure. Whether you have two hours or a whole day, these rides will show you a side of Romania most tourists never see.
